Explosion at the apex of a projectile path
Problem
Work in an inertial laboratory frame, taking $+x$ right and $+y$ upward when components are needed. Treat the named interacting bodies as the system during the stated interval, use SI units, and include every stated external impulse. At the apex of its flight over level ground, a projectile explodes into two fragments with masses $m$ and $2m$. The smaller fragment is left instantaneously at rest and then falls vertically. If the unexploded projectile would have landed a horizontal distance $D$ beyond the apex, where does the larger fragment land relative to the apex? Neglect air resistance.
Hint
Both fragments have the same remaining fall time from the apex.
