Problem
A timber floor beam is hung from a pair of identical 12-mm-diameter A36 steel rods, one at each end of a 3.6 m span. A concentrated equipment load of 48 kN acts at midspan of the beam. The beam is simply supported by the two rods, which are axially loaded. Determine the average normal stress in each rod.
Hint
A midspan load on a simply supported span splits equally into two rod tensions.
